Left Hand, Left. Right Hand, Right.
As the title says, the left side of the painting was painted using my left hand. The right side of the painting was painted using my right hand. (It may be obvious, but I am right-hand dominant.) I used the same colors and lines and brushes on both sides in an attempt to paint the same picture.
On the surface, that idea seems pretty straightforward and the results might seem straightforward as well. However, the longer this painting went on the more intriguing it became.
In the beginning, my left hand was just trying to mimic the right hand. Sloppily, at that! However, the more I continued, the more I realized that when I was painting with my left I began to think differently. I went from thinking, “I am a bad painter with my left hand,” to “I paint differently with my left hand.” (I love when you learn lessons about life in unexpected places.)
Once I got to this point, the right side was starting to be influenced by my left hand. I wasn’t expecting that.
After a couple of hours, the dominant and non-dominant hands started working together towards a single idea. It was as if both sides came into alignment to remind me that at the root of it all is still, one brain.
My brain.
